Instructor Nathan Hurwitz Show bioDr. Nathan Hurwitz is a tenured Associate Professor in Theatre and has three books in print, two textbooks and a coffee table book. This lesson looks at the human voice and its importance to the theatre. We then look at other sounds and how much they help to tell the story of the play. The theatre is ''At its Heart, An Infinitely Aural Medium.'' The theatre is one of the oldest forms of storytelling, telling stories to audiences to reflect their humanity back to them. Since the first actor uttered his first lines in the amphitheaters of ancient Greece, the human voice has been the primary means used to tell stories in a theatrical setting. Create your account Since those earliest days, actors have painstakingly studied vocal production. For hundreds of years, theatres were large outdoor spaces. In those days, long before electronic amplification, actors needed to be able to project their voices to the last rows of the audience. Imagine standing on the fifty-yard line of a football field and addressing the stands - speaking outdoors requires a large sound. Actors not only needed to be loud but needed to be able to modulate their voices to create enough range and variation. The points of their speeches needed to be clear, and they needed to adapt vocal qualities for each character. Projecting the voice means producing a large resonant sound. This calls for controlling the column of air that flows past the vocal cords by using the diaphragm, a muscle located between the thoracic cavity and the abdominal cavity. Proper vocal production for the stage also requires relaxation in the throat, shoulders and jaw, strong breathing techniques, and clear and distinct diction. Mime, silent films, clowning, ballet, and modern dance, for instance, do not include the use of the human voice. Other types of performance, like the Cirque du Soliel shows may have some speech, but these pieces communicate mostly through physical expression. Opera uses the human voice, but only in singing, which is covered in other lessons. In contrast, most plays, musicals, and other theatrical events we attend today rely very heavily on the voice. Create your account The human voice is one of the essential components of most theatrical productions, as theatre is a form of storytelling. Actors in large outdoor amphitheaters in ancient Greece had megaphones built into the masks that they wore, that amplified the voice and changed vocal qualities in a way that made each character distinct. For more than 2,000 years, actors had to develop techniques of vocal production to help them create enough sound and sound distinction for each character. Projection refers to controlling the column of air which the voice is created by. The diaphragm allows the actor control, but the actor needs to be aware of not holding tensions in his or her body. Sound effects can either be atmospheric or situational. Non-verbal performances include mime, silent films, clowning, ballet, and modern dance. Contemporary vocal techniques are informed by the work of voice teachers like Kristen Linklater and Stephen Cheng. To unlock this lesson you must be a Member.
